Pompeii from Naples
You can plan the visit independently. Start with three separate records: the admission you need, the train you will take and the entrance where your visit actually begins.

Can you visit Pompeii from Naples without a tour?
Yes. The park sells admission through its official Vivaticket channel and entrance ticket offices; independent admission does not require buying a guided package. But ‘Pompeii from Naples’ is not one interchangeable product. A rail journey gets you to a station, admission gets you into the archaeological area, and a guided tour adds an interpretation service. Check each inclusion instead of assuming the most prominent search result covers all three.
Our recommendation is to choose one main purpose for the day: exploring the ancient city, adding the suburban villas, or joining a specific guided itinerary. Then work backward from the entrance and return journey. This guide is about arranging that visit—not a list of every discovery at Pompeii, a ranking of tour sellers or a day trip we claim to have tested on the ground. For the archaeology behind the destination, open our companion What Vesuvius kept file.

Evidence note. The park identifies Vivaticket as its official seller. Separating transport, admission and interpretation is our planning framework, not an endorsement of a package.
Pompeii Express or Plus: buy the visit you mean
The park's table effective January 12, 2026 lists standard admission at €20 for Pompeii Express and €25 for Pompeii Plus. Express covers the ancient city, excluding the suburban villas. Plus adds the Villa of the Mysteries, Villa of Diomedes, Villa Regina and the Boscoreale Antiquarium, with the listed shuttle service. Both allow one entry: leaving does not let you re-enter on the same ticket.
These are published standard admission figures, not a checkout quote or a verdict on your eligibility for reductions. Reopen the official page for your date and check the final product, conditions and charges before paying. Our decision rule: if the villas are central to your visit, resolve that scope before purchase. Do not choose ‘Express’ because it sounds like priority entry, or ‘Plus’ because you assume it includes a private guide. Compare the stated inclusions, not the marketing implications of a name.

The ticket name matters; bring identification
The visitor regulations make tickets personal and nontransferable, tied to a day and time window. Staff may compare the name with identification; a mismatch can mean refused admission without refund. Name and date changes are not permitted. The refund rule retains an exception for extraordinary closure, so ‘nonrefundable’ should not be presented without that qualification.
Before paying, check each person's name, date and selected admission window. Save the ticket and keep identification available. For a package, ask which document is the actual park admission and which is the seller's meeting voucher. A confirmation email headed ‘Pompeii’ is not enough to resolve that distinction.

Choose the entrance before choosing the station
The park pairs Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra with the Napoli–Sorrento Circumvesuviana route, stopping at Pompei Villa dei Misteri. EAV's current timetable spells the station POMPEI SCAVI VILLA DEI MISTERI. The park pairs Piazza Anfiteatro with the Napoli–Poggiomarino route and Pompei Santuario. It also lists the FS Napoli–Salerno route to Pompei, a different station.
Keep those names intact in your plan. Porta Marina is on Via Villa dei Misteri, Piazza Esedra at Piazza Porta Marina Inferiore, and Piazza Anfiteatro at Piazza Immacolata. Choose from the entrance or confirmed guide meeting point—not a map pin that simply says ‘Pompeii.’ Add the walk from the actual station. For mobility needs, the park's accessible itinerary starts at Anfiteatro; the most familiar station name is not automatically the best arrival for every visitor.

For Circumvesuviana, use the current EAV record
EAV's rail timetable directory now links a Napoli–Sorrento table valid from October 1, 2026. The table names Napoli Porta Nolana and Napoli P. Garibaldi as separate starting stops and includes Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri in both directions. An older March timetable is not the right default simply because it still appears in search results. Follow the current operator hub to the applicable document.
Choose a usable outbound and return, read the operating notes, and leave room for finding the entrance. We do not publish a universal journey duration, fixed fare or guaranteed departure here. EAV's directory warns that operating restrictions can cause delays or cancellations. A printed timetable is not a live running-status check. If your return connects to a flight or a reserved long-distance train, plan that onward leg separately; do not treat an independent day trip as a protected connection by assumption.

Trenitalia's PompeiLink is a train-and-bus chain
Trenitalia describes PompeiLink as a combined train-and-bus connection to the archaeological area. Its guidance says to select ‘Pompei Scavi’ as the arrival or departure to include that service when booking. That booking label does not mean you have bought an EAV train to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. Inspect the itinerary: operator, rail arrival, bus segment and final stop.
The park describes a link from Pompei railway station, but that overview does not verify your bus departure, its walking connection to your meeting point or admission to the ruins. Compare the complete chain with the EAV option from where you actually start in Naples. A combined transport product still needs its own visit ticket. If a journey planner returns a transfer, price or duration, retain the date-specific record rather than turning it into a general promise for every Pompeii visitor.

Last entry is not closing time—and a domus has its own clock
The park lists October 15–March 15 hours as 9 a.m. opening, 3:30 p.m. last entry and 5 p.m. closing. For March 16–October 14 it lists 9 a.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively. Its daily admission limit is 20,000, with seasonal entry windows. A maximum is not proof that tickets remain for your chosen day.
Individual buildings can stop admitting visitors earlier. The park's open-building list gives separate last-entry times, outside-only views and temporary closures. At this check it also retains a theater note ending October 8; that expired note is not confirmation of today's theater access. Reopen the list and current service notices before selecting must-see rooms. Our recommendation is an earlier visit with a short priority list—not arriving at the final entry time and assuming every interior will remain available until the main gate closes.

Bags, paving and accessibility are part of the route
The regulations exclude suitcases and bulky bags; the permitted bag size is 30 × 30 × 15 cm. They also warn about uneven levels and gaps. Our practical recommendation is to resolve luggage before planning Pompeii as a stop between hotels, rather than assuming a suitcase will be admitted or that storage will have space.
The park's Pompeii for All itinerary starts at Piazza Anfiteatro. Its own guidance still describes slopes that can exceed 8%, small sudden height changes, ancient uneven paving and narrow stretches. An accessible-route designation is not a promise of independent access everywhere. Confirm the arrival, chosen itinerary, assistance and exit for your needs before buying. We have not audited the paths or certified a step-free day trip. The station-to-entrance leg must be checked as well as the route inside; a stroller and a wheelchair are not interchangeable access assessments.

If you choose a guide, match the meeting point to the day
The park advertises two 1.5-hour thematic visits from March 2, 2026: civic Pompeii departing from Porta Marina Superiore and daily Pompeii departing from Piazza Anfiteatro. The listed service price is €8 per person plus admission. This is a published program, not confirmation of a place, language or departure on your date. Open its linked booking record before committing.
Those different meeting points make the station choice a practical decision, not trivia. For any guide, check duration, language, actual park admission, meeting address and the cancellation record. Our editorial advice is to keep one main archaeological visit rather than forcing Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius into a single independent day. That is a pacing recommendation, not a claim that every combined tour is impossible or bad. A volcano excursion is a separate plan; the landscape on our cover does not establish a transfer, crater ticket or safe route.

Your Pompeii planning card: four records before payment
Put these four fields next to your booking. This is our original planning card, not a park-issued document or a route approved by a transport operator. It turns an attractive day-trip idea into specific checks, without pretending a saved screenshot guarantees the visit.
- 01 / ADMISSION
Name what the ticket includes
Exact product, visitor names, date/window, official seller, final price and change conditions. Ancient city, villas, guide and transport should not disappear into one vague package name.
- 02 / ARRIVAL
Pair the station with the entrance
Actual Naples starting stop, operator, full Pompei station name, onward bus or walk, and park entrance or confirmed guide meeting point. Check the final approach, not just the rail line.
- 03 / VISIT
Keep the three clocks separate
Admission window, gate's last entry/closing, and building-specific access. Select a short priority list; reopen dated notices, seasonal hours and any villa scope before travel.
- 04 / RETURN
Retain a workable way back
Return operator and departure, an earlier usable option, luggage arrangements and access needs. Check an onward train or flight separately; no availability or protected connection is promised here.
On the trip-planning page, what you check before paying is decision 4 of 6: what the ticket or service includes, who sells and operates it, the names and dates on it, and the change terms.
