What are Ravenna's mosaics? eight monuments, not one museum

It is easy to arrive in Ravenna expecting one mosaic museum. UNESCO's World Heritage property is instead a serial group of eight monuments: the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Neonian Baptistery, Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, Arian Baptistery, Archiepiscopal Chapel, Mausoleum of Theodoric, San Vitale and Sant'Apollinare in Classe. The grouping is the point: it lets one city show different political, religious and artistic worlds across the fifth and sixth centuries.

UNESCO says the monuments were built in the fifth and sixth centuries and record Ravenna's role as a seat of the western Roman Empire, then an Ostrogothic centre and a Byzantine capital in Italy. That is more useful than treating every mosaic as a separate visual stop. It explains why Roman, Christian, eastern and western traditions appear together without making the buildings interchangeable.

Start with the contrast between spaces. UNESCO describes the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia as small with a dark-blue mosaic interior, the Neonian Baptistery as an exceptionally complete early-Christian baptistery, and San Vitale as a major work of Byzantine architecture in Italy. The point is not to rank them, but to give each a question before you enter: burial and imagery, baptism and ritual, or imperial-era architecture and mosaic program.

Then keep the other locations in view. Sant'Apollinare Nuovo and the Arian Baptistery speak to the Gothic period; the Archiepiscopal Chapel is the only orthodox monument built under Theodoric according to UNESCO; the Mausoleum of Theodoric is a distinct stone tomb; Sant'Apollinare in Classe sits about five kilometres from Ravenna in UNESCO's description. A map or ticket route is therefore a planning tool, not proof that all eight can be entered under one current condition.

The official Ravenna Opera di Religione ticket office offers online purchase for the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and other monuments and museums. That is a useful current visitor channel, but it is not evidence that every UNESCO component has the same ticket, hours, queue, religious-service arrangement, accessibility condition or photography rule on your date.
