Italy, Sourced is an English-language editorial publication about traveling in Italy, moving to Italy and researching Italian family roots. Our guides link to the records behind the answers and explain what still needs checking.
Italy, Sourced is an independent editorial project about the parts of Italy that fall outside the familiar itinerary. It publishes in English for readers who want places, records and oddities checked against public sources.
The method
Every factual claim on this site carries a source, and the source is a public institution wherever one exists: a town hall, a state archive, the Ministry of Culture, Istat, INGV. Where a figure comes from a road-routing estimate rather than a published timetable, the page says so. When an event or opening date cannot be confirmed for the current edition, the page says to check the live calendar. Pages carry the date they were last checked, and nothing here is published from memory.
A source label means the publication has identified where a claim came from. A clickable primary record means that document has been reopened and matched to the wording on this page. Those are deliberately not presented as the same level of evidence.
Corrections
Corrections are part of the publication record. On 13 September 2026 we corrected the length and glaciated share of the Italy-Switzerland border, the legal history of Livigno, the partition date and origin of Cospaia, the current ILCCI rates in Campione d'Italia, the description of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, the chronology and counting of Arbëreshë communities, and an unsupported claim that Falciano del Massico's 2012 order remained in force.
We also rechecked all fourteen town pages against named records. The revision removes unsupported visitor judgements, fixes Venzone's event claim and Roscigno's museum count, corrects Stilo's dating and the booking rules at Compiano, Castelmezzano and Petralia Soprana, and separates current operating details from durable facts.
On 13 September 2026 we rebuilt both Roots guides around primary public records. We corrected the regional chronology and custody of civil-status registers, replaced generic source labels with direct archival records, corrected the date and number of Decree-Law no. 200/2025, stated the citizenship transition rules precisely, and separated Constitutional Court judgment 63/2026 from the later EU referral registered as C-816/26.
Each corrected passage now opens the record used. Earlier generated copies are not treated as evidence.
What this site will not publish
A festival date copied from last year without checking whether this year's edition exists.
A driving time presented as fact when it came from a routing estimate.
A claim about Italian citizenship that ignores Law 74/2025 and the Constitutional Court ruling of March 2026.
A list of hidden villages that contains places with a coach park.
A page written to rank for a search term rather than to answer a question somebody actually has.
Paid links
Italy, Sourced has no paid links today. If a partner program is adopted, every paid link will be marked “paid link” where it appears, the page will carry a disclosure at the top of its content, and the link will never point to a reseller on a page that tells you to buy from the official seller. Partners do not see or change editorial text, and no claim changes because of a commission.
How we measure useful visits
We use Cloudflare for website analytics and to count selected interactions: opening the free guide, following a next-step link, or opening an email draft. Our interaction counter does not read form entries or send email addresses, message text or arbitrary URL parameters. These counts are not confirmed subscriptions, received enquiries or bookings.
The interaction counter respects Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track. Cloudflare may process technical request information to operate these services. Cloudflare privacy policy.
