What is the best way to get from Naples to Capri?

For a foot passenger, start with a scheduled crossing whose departure terminal, boarding requirements and return fit the trip. Caremar identifies two Naples terminals; SNAV describes a hydrofoil connection to Capri. The useful comparison is not simply ‘ferry versus fast boat.’ It is the complete journey from your Naples address to your island destination, with a way back you can use.

Our recommendation: choose the return before you build the sightseeing day. Then compare outbound options against the exact terminal and ticket conditions. A slightly shorter crossing can lose its advantage if getting to the departure point or collecting boarding documents makes the morning awkward. This guide covers regular passenger services, not a private excursion, a vehicle booking or an all-in island tour. We have not booked or tested the individual journeys described here.

Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa are not the same departure

Caremar lists ticket offices at Napoli Molo Beverello and Napoli Calata Porta di Massa separately. Copy the terminal attached to your actual service into the plan; ‘Naples harbor’ is not a precise pickup instruction. Do not assume two offers with the same city pair leave from the same place, or that the word ‘fast’ identifies a particular terminal.

If you arrive by train or stay elsewhere in the city, map the approach to the named terminal rather than to a generic port pin. Include any ticket-office step before the boarding point. If using a taxi, show the operator and terminal together. We do not prescribe a universal station-to-boat transfer time or claim that walking between departure areas solves a late arrival. A booking confirmation and current port directions are more useful than a screenshot of somebody else's trip.

On the trip-planning page, a journey like this is decision 3 of 6, each transfer: the exact station, airport or harbor, the operator, the timetable date, luggage, the last leg and a fallback.

Ferry, fast ferry and hydrofoil: read the dated service, not the label

Caremar's timetable distinguishes ferry and fast-ferry services and splits the year into operating periods. It also marks an additional late service as June–September only. A late-summer timetable is not an October plan. The page makes purchase subject to actual availability; a published row does not reserve a seat or confirm that the boat will sail.

Open the timetable for your direction and date, then check the operator's current notices and booking result. Look for weekday restrictions and seasonal footnotes as carefully as the departure time. We do not publish a universal first or last boat, crossing duration or cheapest operator: those shortcuts hide differences in the actual service. Nor does reduced winter choice mean Capri has no scheduled winter connection. Decide from the dated journey, not from the season alone.

An online purchase may not finish the boarding formalities

Caremar's FAQ distinguishes the online ticket from collecting a boarding pass: it directs passengers to the departure ticket office or a dedicated kiosk where available. Do not assume the purchase email alone completes every step. Read the instructions attached to the actual booking and establish which document you must show before joining the boarding line.

Keep the passenger details, direction, date and operator together. Check mistakes before completing check-in, and keep the operator's assistance details accessible without relying on mobile reception at the dock. A sales cutoff is not the same thing as the required arrival time for boarding. Different operators can use different procedures, so a previous successful trip is not proof that this ticket works the same way. Voluntary changes to a fare and rights following a carrier cancellation are separate questions.

Compare the whole fare: bags, boarding and the booked route

SNAV's Gulf of Naples conditions, dated October 5, 2026, require presentation for boarding at least 30 minutes before the ticketed departure. They include one hand item within 50 × 35 × 20 cm and 9 kg; larger, heavier or additional baggage requires a baggage ticket. These are SNAV's stated terms, not a universal allowance for every Capri service.

Compare the final booking total for the passengers and bags actually traveling. Check the exact route, any requested assistance, the arrival requirement and what happens if you choose to change plans. Do not compare a resident fare with a visitor fare or a bare passenger price with a booking that includes extras. This is a foot-passenger guide: vehicle capacity on a ship does not establish permission to take a car onto the island. Resolve vehicle rules separately before buying a vehicle journey.

Marina Grande is the island arrival—not automatically your destination

The Municipality of Capri places ferry and hydrofoil arrivals at the commercial port in Marina Grande, beside the tourist marina. Its description identifies the funicular connection to Capri town and nearby bus and taxi options. Arriving on the island and reaching an accommodation entrance are two different legs.

Write the final address beside the landing. If you are staying in Capri town, check the onward connection and the final approach; if in Anacapri, plan for that destination rather than treating the Piazzetta as the finish. Do not read the funicular's short ride as a door-to-door transfer: waiting, tickets, bags and the remaining walk still matter. We have not verified a live funicular departure, taxi supply, luggage-handling service or step-free route. Ask the accommodation about the actual entrance and check-in arrangements rather than guessing from a map pin.

For a day trip, choose the return before adding attractions

Caremar publishes the Capri–Naples direction separately, with weekday and seasonal notes. Check that table independently: do not mentally reverse the outbound schedule. Then work backward from the return boarding requirement and the journey back to Marina Grande. A booked island activity is not evidence that a later passenger boat exists.

Three useful planning shapes: for a day trip, keep a usable return and fit the island around it; for an overnight stay, confirm arrival and check-in with the accommodation; for an onward flight or train, examine the entire chain before committing. These are our planning examples, not timed itineraries. A separately bought ferry, train and flight should not be treated as one protected booking without checking the applicable contracts. We give no universal connection buffer and do not promise that a missed onward journey will be reimbursed.

Weather disruption: continuation, refunds and compensation are different

The EU's Your Europe guidance distinguishes reimbursement or re-routing after cancellation, assistance while waiting, and compensation for a delayed arrival. Severe weather can remove entitlement to accommodation or delay compensation under the applicable rules. Weather does not automatically erase every passenger right. A voluntary-change restriction on a ticket is not a complete answer to a carrier-cancellation claim.

Keep the ticket and disruption notice, ask the operator what continuation or reimbursement is offered, and separate that answer from any compensation question. Do not assume an alternative boat will run in the same conditions, or that a privately arranged replacement, hotel or missed flight will be paid for. This is general guidance for regular passenger services, not a ruling on an individual incident. For a tight onward trip, reducing dependence on an unconfirmed same-day island return is a planning choice—not an insurance policy.

Accessibility is a vessel-and-landing question, not a route label

Caremar's reduced-mobility guidance says its ticket office can identify scheduled sailings with a lift-equipped ship and describes advance assistance requests. Contact the operator about the actual journey, equipment and boarding needs before relying on a general service description. A lift-equipped vessel is not proof that the whole trip is step-free.

Check the approach to the Naples terminal, the boarding arrangement, the Capri landing and the remaining journey to the address. Confirm who assists at each stage and what notice the chosen operator requires; do not copy a notice period from another company. Mobility aids, bags and companions belong in that conversation. We have not inspected an individual ramp, certified a route or established that a lift will be operating on your departure. If one part remains unresolved, simplify the journey before optimizing crossing speed.

Your Naples–Capri planning card

Keep these four fields beside the accommodation and ferry booking. This is our original planning card, not an operator-issued itinerary or a reserved service. It makes the full journey visible before a crossing time or attractive headline fare makes the decision for you.

  1. 01 / DEPARTURE

Copy the terminal, not just Naples

Operator, travel date, named Naples terminal and boarding point; route from the actual station or address; any ticket-office step and required arrival time.

  2. 02 / TICKET

    Record the complete passenger booking

Direction, vessel/service category, passenger details, bags, boarding document and relevant conditions. Verify what the final total includes; keep assistance arrangements separately confirmed.

  3. 03 / ARRIVAL

Continue from Marina Grande to the entrance

Exact island address, onward transport, final walk and accommodation check-in. Do not substitute a scenic landmark or a short ride time for the last leg.

  4. 04 / RETURN

    Keep a real way back

Applicable Capri–Naples service, return boarding requirement, approach to the port, current notices and onward commitments. An alternative only becomes a plan when it is actually confirmed.
