The Amalfi Coast in winter: what is actually open

Yes, you can visit the Amalfi Coast in winter—but it is not a quieter copy of the summer trip. Towns remain lived in, buses use dated seasonal timetables, ferry routes and stops can contract, and each museum, hotel and restaurant makes its own operating decision. The claim that the entire coast closes is false; a promise that everything you need will be open is equally unreliable.

Build the trip around confirmed lodging, one walkable reason to be in the chosen town and the last return you can actually take. Treat ferries, hiking and multi-town days as conditional until the operator, weather and road checks agree. An online room or table does not verify breakfast, reception, kitchen hours, luggage storage or transport home.

The examples below are verified anchors, not a census of every open door. They show why a single green check beside the word winter is misleading: even two attractions in central Amalfi use different holiday and maintenance calendars.

   The Cathedral complex lists opening through January 6, then closure from January 7 to February 28. The Paper Museum says January and February public opening is generally Friday–Sunday, with reduced operations after January 7.

   Confirm weekend, appointment and holiday language directly with the named site.

   The Arsenal still lists its daily November–March window. The Cathedral complex lists closure through February 28, while the Paper Museum lists Friday–Sunday public hours and possible reserved visits on other days.

   Combine one verified indoor opening with a flexible outdoor plan; do not build a checklist from summer directories.

   Check again

   Check the exact day, last admission, forecast and return journey again that morning.

Travelmar's current June 2026 file describes its service as annual, while its previous winter timetable was marked valid from November 17. That winter file also references ports becoming available in April and June 2026, so it is evidence of a previous pattern—not confirmation of every route in winter 2026–27. As of September 14, the complete new winter timetable is not published.

Use the operator's timetable for the exact day, then open its next-departure or service notice on the day of travel. A route in a PDF and a boat that actually sails are different facts. Bad sea conditions can remove individual stops or cancel service; a land return must exist before a ferry becomes the fixed link in the itinerary.

Do not turn one operator's timetable into a statement about every ferry company or port. NLG's current Naples–Amalfi and Sorrento–Amalfi calendars end on November 3, 2026, while Positano Jet's published autumn file ends October 31. Those dates do not prove that future winter service is impossible; they prove that each route needs its own current announcement.

SITA Sud's current notice moved the main coast routes to an autumn timetable on September 14, 2026: Amalfi–Positano–Sorrento, Amalfi–Maiori–Salerno, Amalfi–Agerola, Scala–Ravello–Amalfi and Maiori–Tramonti. The local coast PDF is valid only through November 1, while the operator's timetable directory lists the direct Amalfi–Naples line through December 31. A 2025–26 winter file proves those route families had winter operations, but it cannot supply departure times for 2026–27.

Read the legend and validity date on the official PDF, not only a time copied into a map app. Weekdays, school days, Sundays and holidays can use different codes. Verify the last useful return in both directions and leave enough margin to survive a missed connection; two bus legs are not one guaranteed through journey.

Lower traffic is not proof that driving is easy. The SS163 is a cliff road whose operation can change after rain, rockfall, works or an emergency order. A February 2026 landslide at Cetara closed a section of the road; that is not a current closure, but it shows why a winter route needs a live road and local-transport check.

Climate normals describe a thirty-year baseline, not the forecast for a holiday. Use them to understand that rain is part of the planning problem, then replace them with the regional forecast and civil-protection alert close to departure. A Path of the Gods plan also needs current trail access, wind, rain, daylight and a safe exit. A September 2025 municipal notice closed sections of the route, and no later official reopening record was found in this check; a route description or clear summer photograph proves none of today's conditions.

Amalfi publishes the cleanest winter examples: the Arsenal, Cathedral complex and Paper Museum each expose dated hours. Ravello requires more caution. Villa Rufolo's official page currently lists daily hours from March 29, 2026 and guided tours on first Saturdays through March 2027, but it does not publish a clean winter 2026–27 hours table. Villa Cimbrone's current page lists public garden hours and warns about extraordinary closures; it should still be reopened for the exact day.

This is why the guide does not produce a directory of restaurants and hotels labeled open. No public authority publishes a complete real-time denominator, and a booking engine can expose inventory without proving dinner, breakfast, reception or every facility. Ask the named property a dated question and keep the answer with the reservation.

A winter trip works when the fixed parts survive without the optional ones. Run this test before the free-cancellation deadline, then repeat the live checks close to departure.

Go if the point is the landscape, inhabited towns, a small number of verified cultural sites and days that can change shape. Choose another season if the trip depends on boat-hopping, beach clubs, many dining choices, late-night movement or a rigid chain of several coastal towns.

Winter is not automatically cheaper, empty, sunny or easy to drive. Those are price, crowd, weather and road claims that need their own dated evidence. The useful advantage is not a universal bargain; it is the chance to build a simpler trip around what is actually operating.
