Venice from the airport
The useful choice is not simply bus versus boat. Name your airport, your real arrival stop and the last stretch to the accommodation before buying the transfer.

What is the best way from a Venice airport to your hotel?
Start with the airport on your flight confirmation, not the city label in a booking search. ATVO maintains separate airport-service pages for Venice Marco Polo (VCE) and Treviso (TSF). Marco Polo offers land and water connections; Treviso's airport directory lists land connections through different operators. A transfer sold for one airport is not a substitute for the other.
Our recommendation is address-first: for a mainland stay, compare a direct land arrival with the actual final address; for a historic-center or island stay, compare the complete bus-and-onward journey with a relevant boat landing. Neither ‘cheapest’ nor ‘most scenic’ answers where you will carry the suitcase after getting off. This is a route-selection guide, not a ranking of transfer sellers, a hotel recommendation or an itinerary we claim to have tested on the ground.
On the trip-planning page, a journey like this is decision 3 of 6, each transfer: the exact station, airport or harbor, the operator, the timetable date, luggage, the last leg and a fallback.

Mestre, Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia mean different arrivals
Marco Polo's destination guidance pairs ACTV line 5 and ATVO express with Piazzale Roma. It pairs ACTV line 15 and ATVO express with Venezia Mestre station. Venezia Santa Lucia is reached from Piazzale Roma across the Ponte della Costituzione, also called the Calatrava Bridge. The airport's general and destination pages give different walking estimates, so we do not prescribe a universal five- or ten-minute transfer with luggage.
Put the arrival point beside your accommodation entrance. A bus ending at Piazzale Roma does not become a door-to-door ride to a canal-side hotel; Mestre station is not Santa Lucia. The official airport connections described here are bus-to-station journeys, not a train you board inside the terminal. If you continue by rail, search the named station and actual onward train separately. If you continue into the historic center, decide whether the final leg is a walk or a separate waterbus journey before paying.

From Marco Polo, compare the bus endpoint—not just ‘Venice’
For a land arrival, compare the service to the endpoint you need. The airport lists ACTV urban connections separately from ATVO express. ATVO's current Marco Polo guidance places its stops outside Exit D, in the second lane: stop 3 for Venice and stop 4 for Mestre. Treat those as directions to recheck against the signage on arrival, not a reason to board the first airport bus you see.
Open the operator's current timetable and the ticket's destination before purchase. Check any separate onward service, ticket format and luggage conditions. We do not reproduce an ATVO fare or last departure from an unverified booking result. If you stay in Mestre, adding a boat journey merely to satisfy an image of arriving in Venice may create an unnecessary detour. If you stay beyond Piazzale Roma, a low bus price is only one part of the total cost and effort. Compare the whole arrival chain.

From Treviso, follow the new stop instead of an old screenshot
Treviso's airport directory lists ATVO toward Piazzale Roma and Mestre, Barzi toward Mestre and Tronchetto, and MOM/Treviso AirLink toward Treviso and Treviso Centrale station. Those endpoints are different onward plans. A bus to Tronchetto should not be read as the same arrival as a bus to Piazzale Roma; a connection to Treviso Centrale is not a train departing from the airport itself.
A useful current detail: ATVO's line 351 notice relocates the Treviso airport stop to Via delle Canevare from July 1, 2026. Its service page describes reaching the signed path using the pedestrian bridge, with a lift or stairs. Follow the current operator directions and airport signs rather than an old ‘just outside arrivals’ screenshot. Build that walk into your plan, particularly with bags or assistance needs. Recheck which stop belongs to your chosen operator; do not apply a line 351 notice to every airport service.

For a boat arrival, select the Alilaguna landing first
Alilaguna's Orange Line page lists a Marco Polo connection through stops including Guglie, Rialto and Santa Maria del Giglio. Its Blue Line page lists Murano, Lido and several historic-center stops, including San Marco and Santa Lucia. Those are service descriptions, not proof that every boat calls at your preferred landing on your date. Open the line's timetable, map and alerts as a separate check.
For an address near Rialto, compare Orange Line plus the final walk with bus plus onward transport. For Murano or Lido, start with the island and exact landing instead of planning only to ‘Venice.’ These are examples of our decision method, not timed itineraries or a claim that one line is universally best. The operator labels the Red Line summer seasonal: do not assume it is a year-round alternative. A scenic boat arrival is useful only if the landing, departure and remaining approach fit the stay you booked.

An ACTV city pass is not automatically an airport ticket
ACTV's published visitor tariffs list a €10 Aerobus single, valid for 75 minutes, and an €18 return with each leg valid for 75 minutes. It also lists an €18 Aerobus plus 90-minute Rete Unica product. The ordinary city tickets exclude Marco Polo travel and Alilaguna; eligible daily/multi-day tickets need the appropriate airport supplement, purchased at the same time. Do not buy a city pass on the assumption that every airport boat or bus is included.
These are published tariff entries, not a quote for your family or proof of eligibility for a special fare. Compare the exact products and scope at purchase: a return airport ticket and a combined bus/waterbus ticket can have the same displayed price while covering different journeys. Keep Alilaguna, ACTV and ATVO separate unless the specific product explicitly combines what you need. Follow the instructions for your actual ticket format and each change of vehicle; a payment receipt alone should not be assumed to finish every activation or validation step.

A road taxi and a water taxi solve different last legs
Marco Polo's transport directory separates road taxis/NCC from waterbus and private motorboats. It lists the road-taxi Venice endpoint as Piazzale Roma, while private motorboat services have their own operators and prices to check. A price for ‘airport to Venice’ is not enough to know whether you are buying a car ride, shared boat or private boat, or where you will get off.
For any arranged transfer, get the actual pickup, arrival point, included bags, passenger capacity and waiting conditions in the booking record. Ask the accommodation whether a proposed landing is usable and how you reach the entrance from it. Do not infer a private water landing from a hotel photograph or assume that a road vehicle reaches a historic-center doorway. This guide does not quote a private-transfer price or recommend a company: compare the written endpoint and full inclusion list rather than the word ‘taxi.’

With luggage or mobility needs, check the whole chain
Alilaguna's conditions include one small hand item and one suitcase whose combined dimensions do not exceed 160 cm; additional or larger items have separate conditions. The same rules retain safety/crowding limits for boarding, including wheelchair access. Do not transfer one operator's baggage allowance to another, or turn an accessible-service description into a guaranteed place on a particular boat.
ATVO's dedicated accessible-mobility guidance describes equipped vehicles and marked trips, and asks passengers to notify it at least 24 hours in advance. Confirm the actual journey and assistance with the operator. Then check the airport approach, boarding, arrival landing, bridges or steps and accommodation entrance. Airport assistance and a hotel transfer are different arrangements. We have not certified a step-free route or checked an individual lift, boat or bus. If carrying the bags across that final chain is impractical, simplify the route before comparing small fare differences.

For a late arrival or early flight, plan the return now
Use the operator's current schedule for both directions, and allow for getting out of the terminal before the outbound departure. Flight landing time is not the time you are standing at a bus stop or airport dock. For the return, work backward from your airline's required airport arrival and check the walk or local journey to the first stop as well as the airport leg. We do not invent a universal airport buffer, last bus or night-boat timetable.
Reopen operational notices immediately before traveling. Alilaguna's conditions acknowledge possible interruptions from weather, high water and other circumstances. ATVO maintains a route/notice hub. Neither tells us your future service will run or a taxi will be available if you miss it. A backup is only useful when its operator, pickup, price and availability can be confirmed. Tell the accommodation if arrival timing affects check-in; a transport plan does not establish that someone will meet you at the door.
