Start here: how train travel in Italy works

Here is how train travel in Italy works. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana manages the main national rail infrastructure, while different operators run the trains. Trenitalia and Italo are the two principal domestic high-speed brands; regional operators include Trenitalia, Trenord in Lombardy, and other local companies. Identify the operator for each leg and use its own dated search before deciding whether a direct ticket, a connection or a pass fits the trip.

The thing to understand first is that there are two kinds of ticket. On the national long-distance trains, Trenitalia's Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, Intercity and Intercity Notte, the seat reservation is compulsory and made when you buy; the ticket is valid only for the day and the train booked, and it must not be validated. Italo works the same way: a named train, a seat, a fare with its own change rules. A regional ticket is a journey, not a seat: a paper one is validated before boarding and used within four hours, a digital one validates itself at the scheduled departure of the train you chose. Most visitor mistakes come from treating one kind of ticket like the other.

The train can be a useful starting point for a trip between connected cities, not a default for every destination. Rome, Florence and Venice sit on a major high-speed corridor. Smaller towns may need a regional service, a bus, an arranged final leg, or a different base. The seven-day guide below shows one corridor-based itinerary; the last-mile section explains where a rail map stops being enough.

This page is the head of the site's rail cluster: who operates what, how to read a fare, how validation works, what a strike notice means, what the ticket protects, what you can carry, how to reach the door, and when a small town works without a car. Each section ends with the primary pages it rests on, opened on October 17, 2026, and the guide that goes further. Nothing here is a booking, a quote or a promise. A price or a time appears only where its page was reopened on the check date.

Operators and categories: Trenitalia's Frecce, Intercity and Regionale, and Italo

Trenitalia groups its trains into three families, and the family tells you the speed, the stops and the ticket rules. The Frecce are the high-speed trains. Frecciarossa reaches 300 km/h and runs the spine of the country: Turin, Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples and Salerno on one line, Venice to Naples through Bologna, Florence and Rome on another, plus Rome to Genoa, Rome to Reggio Calabria and extensions as far as Lecce, Trieste and Bolzano, with Standard, Premium, Business and Executive levels on board. Frecciargento runs at up to 250 km/h on high-speed and conventional lines; Frecciabianca stays on conventional lines, Rome to Genoa along the coast and Rome to Rimini and Ravenna by way of Terni and Foligno.

Intercity and Intercity Notte serve routes and stops that can differ from the high-speed network. Compare the actual journey, class and fare: an Intercity service is not necessarily cheaper on your date. Night services may offer seats, couchettes or sleeping accommodation. Check which reservation, fare and accommodation conditions apply to the specific service rather than treating a train-family name as the whole product.

Regionale services provide many local and commuter links, usually without a reserved seat. They do not stop in every town, and many villages have no station at all. Check the station, stops and operating day before choosing a base. For Trenitalia regional services the ticket format determines validation and change rules; another local operator may use a different system.

Italo runs its own high-speed services, including connections between major cities such as Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice and Naples. Compare its dated search with Trenitalia's search for the same journey. Confirm the station, class, fare and seller before paying; a reseller displaying both operators is not itself the operator of both trains.

How to read a fare, and when booking early pays

A long-distance fare is three things at once: a price, a train, and a set of rules about changing your mind. Read the rules before the price; on Trenitalia they are in the fare name. Base can be changed without limit until departure, paying any difference, and refunded until departure with a 20 percent deduction; if you miss the train, Base lets you board the next one of the same category within an hour, after telling staff, for a penalty of 10 euros on the check date. Economy can be changed once, date or time only, paying the difference up to the Base price, and is not refundable. Super Economy cannot be changed or refunded, and on both, boarding any other train means traveling without a ticket.

The price itself moves. Trenitalia's own description is that the Base fare 'prevede l'applicazione di differenti livelli di prezzo', several price levels with a limited number of seats each, varying by day, train and class, and that at purchase 'il sistema propone il prezzo più vantaggioso disponibile', the best price still available. Economy and Super Economy are discounted levels on the same logic, with a stated minimum of 7.90 euros on the check date. That is the whole argument for booking early: the cheapest level sells out first, and the discounted fares stop selling between two and nine days before departure depending on the fare, the train and, on the check date, which language version of the operator's page you read. The booking screen is the authority.

Italo's fare page distinguishes Low Cost, Economy and Flex by their change and refund conditions. Low Cost carries substantial restrictions; Economy and Flex offer different flexibility, fees and refund proportions. Even the missed-train Extra Time option is subject to availability and charges. Open the current fare comparison and binding transport conditions, then save the conditions shown for the offer you actually buy. We have not independently reviewed the full October 2026 transport-contract PDF.

How far ahead you can book is a separate question from when buying makes sense. Operators release services and fares on their own schedules, and a missing result does not by itself mean there will be no train. Check the live search and current sales announcements. For a fixed long-distance journey, compare available prices with the flexibility you need; for a regional leg, allow time to buy the correct ticket and understand its use. The Digital Regional Ticket's five-minute sales cutoff is not a recommended arrival time at the station.

Regional tickets: the validation rule depends on the format

Regional trains are where the rules change, and where the fines are. Trenitalia's regional page says a single paper ticket 'must be validated before the departure of the train', at the starting station, on the date printed, and that the journey must then be completed within four hours, subject to regional exceptions. The Digital Regional Ticket, sold on the site and in the app, 'will be validated automatically upon the scheduled departure of your chosen train'; it is valid only for that train and can be bought up to five minutes before departure. The Electronic Regional Ticket needs no validation, is valid for four hours from the chosen departure and must be shown with an identity document. Travel without a valid ticket means the full fare plus a fine, set by regional law where one exists.

A fourth format is newer. Tap&Tap pays a standard second-class regional fare by tapping a contactless Visa, Mastercard or American Express card on the marked validators at departure and again at arrival, on the lines where it is active. The tap out is not optional: without it you pay the maximum regional fare. On the Leonardo Express you tap in only.

Ask one question before you walk to the platform: what format is this ticket? A paper regional ticket may need validation; a Trenitalia Digital Regional Ticket validates at its selected departure time, with specific change and disruption rules. Tap&Tap needs the applicable taps on a participating line. A reserved long-distance ticket identifies a train and place or accommodation. Read the actual product and operator's instructions, not the rule from your previous train.

Strikes and guaranteed trains

Italian transport strikes are subject to notice and service-information rules, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport keeps a public calendar of announced actions. Match the company, sector, date, hours and geographic scope to your journey. An entry is an announcement, not a cancellation list, and notices can change; recheck the operator close to departure.

What runs during a rail strike is decided before it. The Commissione di garanzia, the body the law created to apply it, set the indispensable services of the FS group in a provisional regulation of January 30, 2025: regional trains are guaranteed from 6 to 9 in the morning and 6 to 9 in the evening on working days, 7 to 10 and 6 to 9 on holidays. Trenitalia publishes the same bands, two tables of guaranteed long-distance trains, and the rule for a train already moving: it reaches its destination if it can get there within an hour, otherwise it may stop short. Trenord, around Milan, publishes its own bands and names the two EuroCity trains it always runs.

Italo handles strikes by event: notices and guaranteed-train lists appear on its Italo Informa page when an action is called, and on the check date that page carried none. Trenitalia's refund page sets the money rule: a ticket given up because of a declared strike is refunded in full, until the booked departure for Frecce and Intercity and until midnight the day before for regional trains, or rebooked. The strike guide below walks through the three checks: the ministry's notice, the operator's current list, and your exact train number on the day.

Missed connections: what your ticket protects

EU Regulation 2021/782 and the applicable operator conditions provide the framework for delays and cancellations. Where the relevant provisions apply, an expected final-arrival delay of at least 60 minutes can trigger choices between reimbursement and continuation or re-routing. Delay compensation and assistance have their own conditions, exceptions and limits; they are not an automatic promise of a hotel, a meal or a payout in every disruption. Open the EU guidance and the operator's current procedure for your particular service.

For a connection, establish whether the journey is a through-ticket before paying. One checkout alone should not replace reading the contract: there are legal rules about single transactions, separate-contract information and the seller's responsibilities. Through-ticket protection and arrangements covering separate tickets are different things. If the first train is late, ask staff what continuation is authorized; do not simply board the next reserved service on the assumption that it must accept your ticket.

The regulation also provides a conditional self-re-routing route when continuation options have not been communicated within 100 minutes of the relevant scheduled departure. It concerns necessary, appropriate and reasonable alternatives by public rail, coach or bus, not unrestricted spending on a taxi or flight. Confirm which contract and departure apply and retain timed communications and receipts. The detailed missed-connection dossier explains the limits; compensation exceptions do not automatically remove every other right.

Claims go to the operator first. If the answer is unsatisfactory or never comes, Italy's Transport Regulation Authority, ART, takes a complaint through its online system, SiTe, once 30 days have passed since the complaint to the company; the EU portal says to write to the company within three months. Keep the ticket, the delay certification the operator must tell you how to request, and the receipts. A claim without the record is a story.

  1. 01 / CONTRACT

    One ticket or two?

Ask before paying whether the legs are a through-ticket. The booking screen must say so.

  2. 02 / ASK

    Continuation first, purchase second

Ask the operator which onward train you may take before buying a new ticket yourself.

  3. 03 / RECORD

    Certificate, tickets, receipts

Claim with the operator within three months; after 30 days without an answer, ART through SiTe.

Luggage: free, within limits you should measure

Luggage is free, and that is the beginning of the question rather than the end. Trenitalia says you may bring 'bagagli o altri oggetti facilmente trasportabili', luggage and other easily carried objects, free of charge, in the dedicated spaces, in your own custody, with oversize bags tolerated if they obstruct and damage nothing. No numeric limit appears on its page. Italo publishes one: in Smart, luggage up to 75 × 53 × 30 cm, larger pieces in Prima Business and Club Executive, small bags overhead or under the seat, medium bags only overhead, large ones in the designated racks.

The practical limit is not the rule but the route. A bag you can lift into an overhead rack still has to cross a concourse, board a bus or a boat for the last leg and climb the accommodation's stairs. Count the handovers before the fares: fewer bases mean fewer moves, and a direct train means one. For a stop between two cities the bag needs a place to wait: at Roma Termini the infrastructure manager lists the left-luggage service at Via Giolitti 40, by platform 24, open 7:00 to 21:00 on the check date. One named station, not a promise that every station has a deposit.

For disability or reduced-mobility assistance, use RFI's Sala Blu information and the actual station's arrangements. Request assistance with the notice required for that station, departure and service, and confirm the meeting point and accessible route. Assistance is not a general porter service or a guarantee that every station, train and final leg is step-free. Keep bag handling and the accommodation approach in the same plan.

Stations and the last mile

The ticket ends at a station, and Italian cities have more than one. RFI's directory covers two thousand stations with a page for each: services, accessibility, lifts and ramps, assistance. Use it, and the operator's search, to name the station before the city. Rome has Termini and Tiburtina on the high-speed line; Venice has Mestre on the mainland and Santa Lucia on the island, and a bus or boat from either airport ends at Piazzale Roma or a landing, not at a hotel door. A fare to the wrong station is valid and useless.

Airport rail links have their own names and pages. From Rome Fiumicino, Trenitalia's page says the Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Roma Termini 'in just 32 minutes' and the FL1 regional line reaches Roma Tiburtina in 48 minutes, every 15 minutes on working days and every 30 on Sundays and holidays; the airport operator's page carried, on the check date, a notice dated October 8, 2026 that the Leonardo Express was subject to changes for engineering works. That pairing is the check for any airport arrival. Venice's airports, Marco Polo and Treviso, are reached by bus, boat or taxi rather than train; the Venice guide matches each endpoint to the actual address.

For the last leg, use an authorized taxi rank or booking channel and the local official tariff. For buses and trams, follow the local operator's purchase, activation, validation or contactless rules; there is no single ticket procedure for every Italian city. A transfer written as station, operator, timetable date, luggage, last leg and fallback, the six fields of decision 3 on the trip-planning page, is easier to revise when a train is late.

On the trip-planning page, a journey like this is decision 3 of 6, each transfer: the exact station, airport or harbor, the operator, the timetable date, luggage, the last leg and a fallback.

Small towns without a car

Can you reach small-town Italy by train? Sometimes, and the useful answer depends on the station, the operating day and the final kilometers. National network descriptions cannot establish whether a particular bus runs on a Sunday in February. Treat the regional timetable, local bus information and actual address as separate checks.

The small-town guide below sorts towns into patterns rather than promises: the rail town, where the station is in the town and a regional train is the whole answer; the scheduled-bus town, where the train reaches a hub and a bus with its own timetable does the rest; and the final-mile town, where the last stretch is a taxi, a lift or a walk arranged before the room is booked. Lake Como is the clearest worked example: Como and Varenna are different stations on different lines, Bellagio is a boat crossing from either, and the return is planned first.

Search the timetable for the actual station and service day, including the return, then check works and disruption notices. Open the local bus operator's current timetable for the last leg and note the last departure back. If either check fails, change the date, arrange a confirmed alternative or choose another base; a day trip or a rental car is not automatically a workable substitute. That choice belongs in the route decision before paying for the room.

The train-day check

The day you travel, the plan meets the network. Reopen three records, in this order: the booking on the operator's site or app, with the train, the seat if there is one and the current status; the ministry's strike calendar and, if an action is listed, the operator's guaranteed list; and the station page or departure board for the platform. Keep the ticket and the booking code reachable without a connection and carry an identity document. If something has changed, ask the operator for continuation before buying anything yourself.

Start by identifying the ticket in your hand: a reserved service, a ticket requiring validation, or one that validates automatically under its own rules. Read the fare conditions before comparing prices, keep the through-ticket question beside every connection, and reopen the operator's notices on the day. A useful plan is one you can check and revise, not a promise that every journey will be simple.
