Florence airport to the city. Finish the arrival.

The T2 tram is a direct city connection, not a promise of a door-to-door trip. Choose from your address, bags and actual arrival time, then keep a workable alternative.

Choose from the hotel door, not the word Florence

Take the T2 tram when its stops, your luggage and the remaining walk suit the arrival. Consider a taxi when the final address or bags make that walk unattractive. A prearranged private transfer can be useful when the meeting, vehicle and destination have been agreed in advance. None of these is automatically the best answer for every group.

Florence's municipal visitor site identifies the line as Peretola Airport–San Marco University. GEST describes the airport stop as a short walk from arrivals and departures. Its advertised twenty-minute city connection is a tram journey description, not the time from aircraft seat to hotel room. Passport checks, baggage delivery, waiting and the final walk are separate parts of your arrival.

Start with the accommodation's actual entrance and the number of bags each person will handle. A room described as central may still be inconvenient from the stop you first notice on a map. For an onward train at Santa Maria Novella, include the walk into the station and the time to reach the actual platform; do not treat a tram arrival as already boarding your train.

On the trip-planning page, a journey like this is decision 3 of 6, each transfer: the exact station, airport or harbor, the operator, the timetable date, luggage, the last leg and a fallback.

The operator lists €2, even where another figure remains

On October 28, 2026, GEST's ticket table lists the ordinary 90-minute urban capital-city ticket at €2.00. The municipal airport page still displays €1.70. We use the operator's current fare table for the ticket decision and keep the discrepancy explicit. This is a dated check, not an announcement that a fare has just changed or a promise about next year's price.

GEST lists stop ticket machines, authorized sellers, apps and onboard contactless payment among its purchase channels. Buying a paper ticket and validating it are separate actions: the municipal guidance says to validate the paper ticket onboard. Follow the instructions for the exact ticket you choose rather than assuming every digital product works like paper.

Do not assume one bank-card tap buys travel for the whole party. Autolinee Toscane's current tip tap FAQ specifies one passenger per device; different devices can use the same underlying card. Keep the same card or device for taps within a journey. For multiple tickets, the operator points to its app. Choose the method deliberately before boarding, and keep the device used available for inspection. No bank-card details belong in a message to this site.

Evidence note. Current operator FAQ specifies one passenger per device, different devices may use the same underlying card, and the same card/device is retained for taps within a journey. The app is the stated alternative for multiple tickets. This is more precise than the municipal shorthand of one own card per person; no bank account, payment or transport purchase accessed.

A suitcase can change both the fare and the choice

GEST's airport guidance allows one bag up to 10 kilograms and 55×40×20 centimeters free. Larger permitted bags need an additional ticket: its stated upper limits are 20 kilograms and 80×45×25 centimeters per bag, with a maximum of two such bags per person. Bags exceeding those upper dimensions or weight are prohibited under the published rule. Check your actual luggage, not just the airline's label for it.

The same page says trams do not have dedicated luggage-storage spaces and asks passengers not to obstruct others. A valid baggage ticket does not create a reserved rack or a guaranteed seat. If several heavy cases already make the arrival awkward on paper, compare a suitable vehicle rather than assuming you will solve the problem after boarding.

For a taxi or private car, describe the cases as well as the passenger count. Ask whether the proposed vehicle can take all of them and how they will be loaded. If a child seat, step-free boarding or another specific arrangement matters, obtain an explicit answer before relying on it. We have not checked an individual vehicle or assessed accessibility for your group.

The last airport departure is not the end-of-service headline

The T2 timetable checked October 28 lists the first airport departure at 05:00. Its last departure from Peretola Aeroporto is 23:58 Sunday through Thursday, and 01:15 on Friday and Saturday nights. Those are the airport-to-city departures; a broad statement that service runs until 00:30 or 02:00 does not mean you can board at the airport at those later times.

The reverse direction has its own figures: the San Marco–Università terminus begins at 05:10, with last departures at 00:20 Sunday through Thursday and 01:50 on Friday and Saturday nights. A stop partway along the line has a different passing time. Check the direction, your boarding stop and the service night, especially when a departure falls after midnight.

A flight's landing time is not the time you will be standing at the tram stop. For a late arrival, decide what you will do if the flight or bag delivery pushes you beyond service. For an early return, work backward from the airport arrival time required for your flight. The first tram is useful only if that complete plan works; we do not supply a universal flight-check-in buffer or guarantee the timetable.

A taxi tariff and a private-transfer quote are different

The municipal visitor page gives an airport-to-historic-center taxi base fare of €28, excluding luggage, night and public-holiday surcharges. That wording is not an all-in quote for every hotel marketed as Florence. Confirm whether the actual destination falls within the stated tariff area and what applies to your journey. Do not automatically apply the airport-to-city wording to the reverse trip.

A private transfer needs its own written proposal. Specify the flight, passenger count, luggage, final entrance and what happens if arrival is delayed. Establish where to meet, how waiting is handled, which charges are included and how any change or cancellation is dealt with. A service described as private does not by itself settle those details or guarantee that the car can stop at the hotel door.

This is a comparison of decisions, not a taxi dispatch or an offered transfer package. We have not obtained a fare quote, held a vehicle or confirmed a supplier. You can use the public transport links without contacting us. If the airport leg is part of a larger Tuscany stay, the linked trip planner helps you describe the whole arrival before choosing the individual service.

Keep one complete arrival and one credible alternative

Write a short arrival plan with four fields: airport, expected time at the transport stop, final entrance and bags. For the tram option, add the boarding direction, ticket method, suitable luggage allowance and final walk. For a car, add the agreed meeting point and the confirmed scope of the charge. Leave an unanswered question open instead of filling it with an optimistic estimate.

Then name the condition that makes you switch plans: a late flight, luggage outside the tram limits or an arrival that no longer fits the onward train. The alternative should solve that specific problem. A second route that shares the same tight connection is not much of a fallback.

The photograph shows Florence, not the airport platform, a transfer vehicle or current service conditions. Our small map marks the city at an approximate scale; it is not a route or a hotel entrance. Use the linked city, rail and Tuscany guides to finish the rest of the journey, and reopen the operator's timetable and service notices near departure.

For an onward bus journey on October 30, 2026, read the latest update above the old strike notice. Autolinee Toscane's October 28 update says the Ministry's October 27 order, number 204T, postpones the USB general strike planned for October 30 to another date, including local public transport. The earlier strike text remains below it for reference. Do not treat its old guaranteed-service windows as an active October 30 restriction, or this postponement as a guarantee that every journey will operate normally. Recheck your exact operator and line near departure; the update does not provide a replacement strike date.

Related questions

How much is the Florence airport tram?

GEST's fare table checked October 28, 2026 lists €2.00 for the ordinary 90-minute urban ticket. The municipal visitor page still shows €1.70; use the operator's current table. Permitted larger bags can need an extra ticket.

Does the T2 run all night?

No. Check the actual directional last departure. The airport-to-city timetable inspected lists 23:58 Sunday–Thursday and 01:15 on Friday/Saturday nights, not the later end-of-service headline.

Is €28 the total taxi price to every Florence hotel?

No. The municipal page describes an airport-to-historic-center base excluding specified extras. Confirm the exact destination, applicable charges and direction before treating it as a total.

Can I take a large suitcase on the tram?

Check GEST's published dimensions and weight limits. Permitted larger bags need an additional ticket, oversize/overweight bags beyond the maximum are prohibited, and there are no dedicated luggage-storage spaces.

Choose the arrival you can actually complete, rather than the shortest number on a map. A suitable stop, manageable luggage and a realistic final leg matter more than a headline transfer time.
