Rome at Easter 2027: what you can book—and what you cannot

Easter Sunday falls on March 28, 2027. That date is confirmed; a complete Easter program for Rome is not. The Vatican's official 2027 calendar page exists, but it contains no Holy Week events as of September 14, 2026. The Vatican Museums have not published a 2027 opening calendar, and Rome has not published a 2027 road or public-transport plan for the ceremonies.

Reserve the parts governed by a real booking window. Monitor the parts governed by a ceremony or security plan. Do not copy 2026 Mass times, road closures or museum days into 2027, and do not pay a reseller for a papal-liturgy ticket that the Vatican says is always free.

These are the calendar dates, not a ceremony schedule. A familiar name such as Palm Sunday, Via Crucis or Easter Mass does not confirm the 2027 venue, presider, access procedure or time. Those details require a later Holy See or Rome notice.

   The liturgical week begins. The 2027 Vatican venue, time and public-access notice are not published.

   Holy Thursday

   Not an Italian national public holiday. Church-specific services can still change visitor access.

3. MAR 26

   Good Friday

   Not an Italian national public holiday. Treat any Colosseum-area evening plan as conditional until Rome publishes traffic measures.

4. MAR 27

   Holy Saturday

   The 2027 Easter Vigil time and access procedure are not yet in the Holy See calendar.

5. MAR 28

   Easter Sunday

   A public holiday and the start of daylight saving time in Italy. Recheck every early departure clock.

6. MAR 29

   Easter Monday

   Pasquetta is a national public holiday. Attractions, restaurants and transport publish their own holiday operations.

The Holy See says tickets for General Audiences and liturgical celebrations presided over by the Holy Father are always free. Lay visitors use the Prefecture of the Papal Household route shown on the official Vatican page. The separate liturgical-booking portal is for bishops, priests and deacons, not a shortcut for tourists.

The same official system says registration starts only after the calendar of celebrations is published. That is the gate. Until a 2027 Holy Week entry appears, no outside page can confirm the schedule or sell an official papal-liturgy ticket.

Saint Peter's Basilica is different from a papal celebration. Current Basilica guidance says general entrance is free and does not require a reservation. An optional paid timed service includes a digital audio guide and a dedicated access route; it is not a ticket to Easter Mass.

The Colosseum has the clearest official clock: timed-entry sales currently open exactly 30 days before the visit date through ticketing.colosseo.it. If that rule remains unchanged, the Easter-week dates would begin entering the official sales window on February 19. The park does not publish an exact release hour, and its current dated opening schedule stops before Easter 2027.

Saint Peter's current optional timed service can be booked through the Basilica's own site, while free general entry remains available without it. The Basilica warns that extraordinary events can cancel, postpone or reschedule tourist visits, so a booking does not override liturgical or security requirements.

The Vatican Museums are a separate visit with a separate entrance and ticket. The official visitor page currently exposes its own ticket service and only a 2026 calendar. Do not transfer a 2026 Easter closure pattern into 2027; return when the Museums publish the 2027 calendar and use only the official ticket domain.

The Pantheon publishes a monthly visit calendar and says tickets are normally released around the middle of the preceding month, so March 2027 should be checked in mid-February without inventing an exact day. Galleria Borghese requires advance booking but publishes no fixed 2027 release horizon; reserve when official inventory appears, not when an outside seller creates a listing.

Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are national public holidays. That does not create one opening rule for the Colosseum, state museums, Rome's civic museums, Vatican institutions, churches, shops and restaurants. Each operator publishes its own calendar, sometimes only close to the date.

Good Friday is not a national public holiday in Italy, but a ceremony can still close a church to sightseeing or change access around the Colosseum. Easter Monday can affect ordinary services even when a major attraction opens. The useful question is always which institution, on which date, under which current notice.

March 28 is also the last Sunday of the month, but the Vatican Museums' current rule excludes the free last-Sunday opening when it coincides with Easter Sunday. Because the Museums have not published their 2027 calendar, treat that as a standing-rule warning—not a confirmed 2027 opening or closure.

Rome's 2026 Via Crucis plan shows the scale of a possible central-city change without proving the 2027 plan. In 2026, Rome closed the Colosseo stations on both Metro B and Metro C from 1:00 p.m., diverted multiple surface lines and restricted roads around the Colosseum. Those exact times, stations and streets cannot be reused for March 26, 2027.

The archaeological park also closed the Colosseum and Forum-Palatine at 1:00 p.m. on Good Friday 2026 for that year's preparations. That is a reason to avoid treating a Good Friday 2027 Colosseum slot as secure before the park issues its notice, not proof of the same closure or venue next year.

When Rome publishes the 2027 notice, match it to the hour and route you need. The official ATAC Roma app provides live service information and arrival forecasts; Rome's city notice and Roma Mobilità should remain the authority for event-specific closures. Walkable distance is not the same as an open pedestrian route through a security perimeter.

Now: secure the trip shape and record the official pages. At the 30-day mark: open the Colosseum's official ticket site for the exact date. After the Holy See and Vatican Museums publish their 2027 calendars: decide which ceremonial and museum plans are real rather than assumed.

Seven days before departure, reopen every attraction, church and transport page. On Good Friday and Easter Sunday, check Rome's mobility notice and live ATAC status before leaving. If the clock changes during the trip, verify every Sunday-morning alarm, train and airport transfer in local time.
