Made for you. Worth the time.
A beautiful garment, a pair of shoes, something made to keep. Give the craft its own time, and build an Italy journey worth enjoying around it.

Help plan my tailoring trip See how we plan the whole trip
For bespoke tailoring in Italy, plan the fittings before the trip
Choose what you want made, then establish the fitting calendar before building the journey around it. An alteration to an existing garment, a made-to-measure order and a bespoke commission do not require the same process. A short stay may be enough to explore a house and begin an order, but it should not be sold as enough time to complete one. The best starting question is not how much luxury you can buy in a day; it is what the maker needs from you to make the result work.
For an important wardrobe piece, the trip can be as considered as the commission: time in one city, an unhurried consultation and space for the rest of Italy. For shoes or leather goods, separate the pleasure of visiting a workshop from the production and delivery of your order. A higher budget does not remove fitting stages or turn an existing design into something individually developed. Choose the service because it answers your brief, not because a description uses the word exclusive.
This independent guide uses nine primary pages reopened October 24, 2026. Named houses are examples, not our partners, inspected ateliers or appointments held for you. Several tailoring examples concern menswear; we have not verified every maker's scope for other garments or clients. We have not commissioned products, tested their fit or obtained private calendars. The opening photograph is Florence city context, not an atelier, a completed order or a view included with a stay.
- An existing piece
Ready-to-wear and alterations
Start with the garment and confirm the changes, limits and collection date.
- A defined service
Made-to-measure
Ask which measurements, pattern adjustments and fittings the named service includes.
- An individual commission
Bespoke
Establish the pattern or last, fitting stages, return visits and final acceptance.
On the trip-planning page, what you check before paying is decision 4 of 6: what the ticket or service includes, who sells and operates it, the names and dates on it, and the change terms.

Choose the garment and the method, not just a famous name
Begin with how you will use the piece: a jacket for regular travel, a suit for a particular occasion or an addition to a wardrobe you already enjoy. Describe the shape and feeling you want, and what has not worked before. Ask to understand the house's approach before deciding that every detail should be different. A commission is a collaboration with a maker, not simply a list of decorative options attached to an expensive purchase.
ZEGNA's Italian Made to Measure page describes specialist advice and choices of silhouette and finishing details, with a broad reference to a few weeks. That is useful evidence of a named service, not your delivery date or proof that its method is identical to another house's bespoke offering. Ask what starts from an established model, what can be changed and which physical fittings are required. Do not use made-to-measure and bespoke interchangeably in a proposal unless the actual process is explained.
Keep the scope narrow enough to evaluate. One carefully chosen piece can reveal whether you like the house's style and the working relationship before ordering a whole wardrobe. Ask about fabric suitability, weight, care and the climate in which you will wear it, rather than choosing only by rarity or price. For an altered ready-to-wear piece, obtain the proposed changes and their limits. It may be exactly the right answer for your trip without pretending to be an individually developed garment.

Bespoke suits need an agreed sequence, not a generic turnaround
Brioni's English service page describes an individual pattern and two fittings. Its timing is less clear: one passage says approximately four weeks after measurement, while the journey section says six to eight weeks. Those statements should not be combined into a guaranteed deadline. Ask which production stage and service the estimate covers, and obtain the actual fitting and completion plan before making a nonrefundable journey depend on it.
Rubinacci lists bespoke service in Milan and Naples, as well as London and traveling events. The public page does not give a fitting count or completion interval that we can apply to your commission. Choosing the city therefore starts with the maker's confirmed process, not a universal rule that one Italian tailoring capital is quicker. Compare the same brief and ask who takes the measurements, who sees each fitting and where any further work takes place.
An agreed sequence should identify the first consultation, any intermediate fitting, final try-on and what happens if a correction is needed. Ask which visits require your physical presence, whether dates are provisional and when a slot becomes confirmed. Leave room for the possibility that a fitting reveals more work. The point is not to add ceremonial appointments; it is to keep the garment and your travel plans aligned. A famous name does not make an unfinished fitting calendar a finished itinerary.

Bespoke shoes are a separate project, not a holiday-day purchase
Stefano Bemer describes a customized last and shoe, with refitting three to six months after the first fitting. Its delivery wording mixes months and weeks, so no completion interval can be inferred. Its separate made-to-measure page describes width and instep adjustments. Confirm the service rather than assuming every customization is bespoke.
For your brief, start with how and where you will wear the shoes, the styles you like and what you want to improve about your current fit. Ask about the trial or fitting stage, what can change afterward and the point at which the final specification becomes fixed. A personal last, a color choice and an adjustment to an existing fit are not interchangeable promises. Nor is bespoke footwear a medical or orthopedic treatment; we have not tested the shoes or established a health outcome.
Do not schedule collection for the last afternoon of a first visit without a maker-confirmed plan. Ask whether another fitting must happen in Florence or can be arranged elsewhere, and what happens if travel dates change. Understand the proposed final check, any break-in guidance, care and repair options before deciding that shipment alone completes the process. This is a commission to live with, not an item whose value depends on bringing it home in the same suitcase as the memories of the trip.

An artisan visit, a made-to-order object and personalization are different
A visit can introduce you to a craft without becoming a bespoke commission. Scuola del Cuoio in Florence describes approximately one-hour technical group visits covering its work and techniques; weekday reservations and separate Santa Croce church admission apply. Its free tours depend on staff availability and cannot be reserved in advance. That is not evidence of an exclusive atelier visit, a private lesson or unrestricted access whenever the retail space is open.
An object made after you order may still follow an existing design. The current catalog shows about 150 days for some unavailable designs and four months for others; these are product-specific notices, not one promise for all artisan work. Ask whether you are choosing from established models, commissioning a different design or personalizing a finished piece. Initials, color and hardware can be meaningful choices, but they do not by themselves establish an individually developed pattern. We have not confirmed a particular personalization service or product.
For a leather bag or another keepsake, agree dimensions, intended use, materials, finish and the details that need approval before production. Separate visiting, purchasing and delivery in the plan. Ask who approves a change, whether there is a sample or drawing and what happens if the result differs from the agreed specification. A generous shopping allowance is not a substitute for that brief. If watching artisans work matters, check the actual working day rather than treating every retail opening as a live demonstration.

Choose one useful base and confirm any fittings outside Italy
Milan, Florence and Naples are city choices, not a compulsory three-stop circuit. Rubinacci's published Milan and Naples locations, Florence shoemaking and a Florentine craft visit point toward different reasons to travel. Begin with the commission you want most and the maker's confirmed place for the first appointment. Our small map marks approximate city orientation only; it is not an atelier locator, a car route or the entrance for a fitting.
A traveling service may make a later appointment easier, but do not assume it solves the entire calendar. Rubinacci publishes US trunk shows, including October 2026 entries. A listed event is not a slot held for you, and an event near your home does not prove that every stage can be handled there. Ask the maker which stage, person and future date can actually be confirmed. Another brand's boutique, a hotel concierge or a local alterations specialist is not automatically authorized to complete that house's commission.
Once the anchor is real, choose a comfortable stay and leave time for meals, art or simply the city. If companions are not commissioning anything, give them a worthwhile day of their own rather than a sequence of waiting rooms. Avoid using an arrival day as the only opportunity for measurements or an international departure as the only moment for collection. A calmer itinerary can serve both the fitting and the holiday without promising that a driver, hotel or atelier can absorb every delay.

Compare the whole commission cost and what happens afterward
Stefano Bemer's undated page lists $4,700 plus $700 for the last: $5,400 in starting components, not a current Italy all-in quote. Currency, tax, specification, delivery and destination charges need clarification. A component price is not a whole-trip price or a promise of the same terms for future orders.
For any commission, compare the same scope: material, design, pattern or last, fitting stages, adjustments, final acceptance, packing, insured delivery and aftercare. Ask which changes are included, which require a new charge and what happens if your schedule interrupts the process. Establish the deposit, remaining payments, cancellation and change conditions before committing. These are questions for the actual seller, not terms we have negotiated or a uniform policy that applies to all named houses.
Keep the commission allowance separate from hotels, transport and the rest of the journey. If an item will be shipped, specify the destination, who arranges carriage and who handles loss, damage or a further fit correction. International shipping is not the same as taking an item home personally; consult the relevant current customs guidance rather than assuming a tax refund settles import charges. Do not send payment details or identification to our travel desk in a first email. We have not checked a personal customs position or issued a quote.

For a wedding or fixed occasion, protect the deadline first
If the piece is for a wedding, anniversary or another fixed occasion, work backward from when you need to wear it, not from the flight home. Tell the maker the real date and the date by which you want the finished item in hand. Ask whether final fitting, correction time and delivery are included in the proposed schedule. A completion estimate that leaves no room for any adjustment is not the same thing as an item ready for the occasion.
Decide what makes the commission meaningful: a particular maker, a silhouette, a fabric or the experience of having something developed for you. If the calendar does not fit, changing the method may be more sensible than trying to accelerate every stage. Ready-to-wear with confirmed alterations can be a legitimate alternative; beginning a bespoke project for later use can be another. Neither requires presenting a rush order as superior service. We do not promise priority production, a maker's exception or an expedited result.
For a gift, separate the surprise from decisions that require the recipient's presence and preferences. A consultation may be more thoughtful than guessing measurements or commissioning an irreversible specification. Keep any celebration discreet by describing the practical request without circulating someone else's photographs or private details. If several people want garments or shoes, each needs an actual scope and fitting plan; one person's confirmed appointment does not establish capacity for the whole party. Keep the celebration enjoyable even if the commission belongs to a longer story.

Tell us what you want made and the Italy journey around it
Start with a short email: garment, shoes or artisan object; what draws you to it; your likely Italy dates and base; and any occasion deadline. Say whether you are exploring a first commission or returning to a maker you already know. If you could return for a later fitting, mention the possibility without treating it as a fixed commitment. A preferred house and a separate commission allowance are useful but optional. There is no need to explain your wealth to begin.
We can discuss the trip around those priorities: the city that makes sense, stays, unhurried time between appointments and how the commission relates to the rest of your Italy plans. The maker must confirm its service, availability, process and terms; an inquiry is not an appointment, production slot or order. We have not obtained an exclusive relationship or promised access. Do not send body measurements, private fitting photographs, passport scans or payment information in the first message; start with the travel and creative brief.
The email button opens a draft in your own app, already tied to this guide. Edit it as much or as little as you want, then send it yourself. Nothing is sent by the page, and a travel inquiry does not subscribe you to a marketing list. If a call would be easier, choose the optional callback and add a suitable time zone. Provider, scope, fees and arrangements need confirmation before you commit. The aim is a well-considered journey and a useful conversation, not more forms to complete.

Related questions
Can I finish a bespoke suit during a short Italy vacation?
Do not assume so. Agree the actual measurements, fitting stages, completion and correction time with the maker before relying on your itinerary. A first stay may begin the commission rather than finish it.
Is made-to-measure the same as bespoke tailoring?
Not automatically. Ask what starts from an established model, which pattern adjustments are possible and what is individually developed. Compare the named service's process and fittings, not just its label or price.
How long do bespoke shoes in Florence take?
Confirm the maker's complete calendar. Stefano Bemer describes refitting three to six months after the first fitting; ambiguous delivery wording prevents us from inferring a final deadline.
Can later fittings happen in the United States?
Only if the maker confirms the stage, person, location and date. A published trunk show is not a held appointment or evidence that every fitting and final correction can happen outside Italy.
Does an artisan workshop visit include a custom-made product?
Not necessarily. A technical visit, a class, an existing-design order and a bespoke object are different arrangements. Confirm the actual scope, working day, specification, price and delivery separately.
How do we start planning an Italy tailoring trip?
Email what you want made, your dates and likely base, any occasion deadline and whether return fittings are possible. Budget and a callback are optional. The button opens your own draft; nothing is sent, booked or subscribed automatically.
