Shalise Barnes: The Work Behind a Sicilian Home

From a home in Modica to the properties she shares online, the designer behind Project Artemis connects the appeal of old Sicilian buildings with the less visible work of making them function.

How this profile was reported

Reporting basis. Independent editorial profile from the public primary sources listed below, reopened October 18, 2026. No interview, private correspondence, full Instagram-feed audit or follower measurement. Personal and professional accounts remain attributed. The cover is a licensed context photograph, not a portrait or a photograph of the creator's home; no creator endorsement implied.

Commercial context. Project Artemis sells consultations, property-search and buying support, and separately quoted design and renovation services. This report is independent: no paid placement, affiliate link or relationship with Italy, Sourced. No listing availability, fee, return, professional registration or personal purchase outcome is endorsed.

The question. What should you look for in a historic Sicilian home beyond the listing photos?

The Instagram image has an address in the real world

A photograph of an old Sicilian home can make the decision seem complete. You can already imagine the light on the floor, the long breakfast and the room you would restore first. Shalise Barnes's public work is interesting because the image is also the beginning of another conversation: what would it take to live in, repair and maintain the place you are looking at?

On the current Project Artemis homepage, Barnes describes herself as an interior designer and property advisor living in Modica, Sicily, where she is restoring her own historic home. The site links to Instagram at @projectartemis.co and includes reels; its press page describes her social content as historic properties, restoration and building a life in Southern Italy. Those are her public descriptions, not an independent inspection of a house or proof of a legal residence category.

A designer's way of looking at a house

Her studio biography traces a background between the United States and Canada, study in Paris, and a move to Malta in 2017 before founding Artemis Interior Design the following year. The current Project Artemis pages bring that design background into property work in Italy. The history comes from her own professional account; it does not establish a particular citizenship, registration or audited number of projects.

The thread connecting those pages is attention to what already exists. Materials, proportion, history and light are treated as starting conditions rather than obstacles to remove. For a reader attracted to restoration, this is a more useful lens than a before-and-after reveal alone: which parts of a building give it its identity, and which changes would help it work without making it anonymous?

Before the floor plan, decide what life needs to fit

Project Artemis distinguishes a permanent home, a holiday house and a rental property at the beginning of its process. That sounds straightforward until the same beautiful room is expected to serve all three. A place designed for occasional visits faces a different brief from a year-round home; a rental introduces guests, turnover and operational work that a private retreat does not.

An original exercise for the reader is to write two descriptions before comparing listings. First, describe an ordinary week in the home: who is there, what they need and who looks after it when they leave. Then describe the work between the keys and that week. The gap between those two descriptions is the project. This is a planning exercise, not a budget estimate or a claim that Barnes has assessed your circumstances.

The number outside the photograph

Barnes's service page separates the purchase-and-renovation budget from purchase costs and furnishing. It also distinguishes buying support from separately agreed design and renovation work. The important editorial point is the boundary between these stages, not a universal minimum price or a promise that a particular house will fit a social-media budget.

For a first comparison, give each property a page with headings for acquisition, checks, building work, furnishing, ongoing care and unresolved questions. Do not fill a blank with an optimistic zero. A room you cannot yet cost belongs in the unresolved column until the appropriate professional can assess it. This framework is our synthesis of the project-first approach, not a quotation, financial forecast or substitute for a property-specific inspection.

Keep the creator's business visible

Project Artemis is not only a social account. It offers paid consultations and property-search and buying support; the website also describes design, renovation and hospitality work. A reader should be able to enjoy the content while recognizing when a story leads into an offer. Naming that context makes the reporting clearer without turning the feature into a recommendation to hire someone.

The service description itself says technical surveys, legal checks, tax advice and formal permissions belong with the appropriate qualified specialists. Italy, Sourced has not tested a consultation, verified a professional registration or reviewed a client contract. We do not reproduce changing fees or claim that a listed property is still available. A creator's experience can help you ask better questions; it cannot answer a different buyer's questions automatically.

The useful thing to take away from the feed

The appeal of this story is not that every reader should buy a historic home in Modica. It is the way a designer's eye can make the work behind the fantasy easier to see. Character is something to identify and protect; a workable life is something to specify. Neither comes free with an attractive asking price.

Before saving the next listing, save the questions it leaves unanswered. Then use our practical files on property and residence, low-price houses and renting from abroad to investigate your own route. We have not interviewed Barnes, inspected her home or obtained a reusable portrait for this report. No follower count, personal purchase price or rental return is needed to make the central question useful: what will this particular building ask of the life you want to put inside it?
