At Roman Saepinum, an ancient drove road becomes the paved decumanus: the route of the flocks is still the route through the town.

Why it is worth the drive

Roman Saepinum was laid out where two established routes met: the path that became the Pescasseroli-Candela drove road and the route descending from the Matese. The planners used them as the decumanus and cardo of the new town, which can still be read through its gates, forum, basilica and theatre.

The transhumance route does not merely pass the ruins: inside Saepinum it becomes the paved decumanus. The archaeological park traces the movement of flocks, goods and people along that corridor into the twentieth century.

Getting there

Naples (NAP) is about 130 kilometres by road. There is no station at the archaeological area, so driving is the simplest way to reach Altilia.

The honest part

The ten-euro ticket and published hours are current operational information, not permanent facts. The museum has separate hours, accessibility arrangements require direct contact, and temporary closures can occur: use the park's official page close to the visit.
