Petralia Soprana
An active rock-salt mine at Raffo contains a contemporary-art museum that opens only on announced, bookable dates.

Why it is worth the drive
Raffo, two kilometres from Petralia Soprana, contains an active rock-salt mine and the MACSS contemporary-art museum below ground. Because the museum sits inside a working industrial site, public access is limited to dates and timed turns announced by the municipality.
In the historic centre, the Church of the Santissimo Salvatore keeps its elliptical plan and column-supported dome from the eighteenth-century enlargement. The municipality carefully presents its earlier use as a mosque and Norman reconsecration as a local tradition, not a settled archaeological fact.
Getting there
The municipality directs road arrivals from the Palermo-Catania motorway through the Tremonzelli or Irosa exits and the SS120. Its residents are distributed across thirty-three outlying settlements, so a town-centre visit and the Raffo mine are separate stops.
The honest part
For August 2026 the municipality reopened the MACSS only on selected dates, with capped timed turns and mandatory booking. That notice is evidence of access, not a permanent weekly schedule: wait for the next official opening announcement.
