Offida
A seven-room lace museum and two street rites - a mock ox and bundles of burning reeds - make Offida's craft and Carnival unusually legible.

Why it is worth the drive
Offida's bobbin-lace museum fills seven rooms with historic and recent work. It belongs to the Palazzo De Castellotti museum complex, so the lace sits beside the town's archaeological, popular-tradition and art collections rather than as a stand-alone souvenir display.
Santa Maria della Rocca was built in 1330 on the foundations of a Lombard castle; its three-aisled crypt retains fourteenth-century frescoes, many attributed to the Master of Offida. The historic Carnival turns on two local rites: the mock-ox chase of Lu Bov Fint on the Friday before Lent and the burning reed bundles of Li Vlurd on Shrove Tuesday.
Getting there
Ancona (AOI) is about 110 kilometres by road. Offida has no railway station; the final connection from the Adriatic rail corridor is by road or local bus.
The honest part
Museum hours change by season, and Santa Maria della Rocca has stairs and is not step-free. Carnival is the town's major collective event, so check the official calendar and accommodation before committing to those dates.
