Castelmezzano
Fifty-four steps cut into a sandstone spire once reached the watch point of Castrum Medianum. Today the climb is supervised and equipped.

Why it is worth the drive
Castelmezzano's Norman Stair is not an ordinary lookout path. Fifty-four steps were cut into one of the sandstone spires to reach a watch point in the walls of the Norman-Swabian Castrum Medianum; the surviving wall fragments and rainwater cistern belong to the same fortified site.
The village is built into the Lucanian Dolomites. Its outdoor network now includes the 1.5-kilometre Angel Flight between Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, the old Seven Stones track between the two towns and equipped routes on the surrounding rock.
Getting there
Castelmezzano has no railway station. The municipality's road directions reach the centre through SP32 and the Santa Croce Camastra road; check the current route and parking arrangements before the final mountain section.
The honest part
Climbing the Norman Stair requires a ferrata kit and an expert operator. The municipal page currently sets a minimum age of ten and lists advance booking and an eight-euro single ticket; treat all of these as changeable operating details.
